All About Squash

At Brondesbury Sports Club

Squash Information

Brondesbury squash is a friendly two-court club offering a warm welcome to all new players. We are very supportive of beginners and improvers and make sure new members are able to enjoy the social as well as the competitive side of squash. Our Friday night ‘Social Squash’ sessions from 6:45pm are always popular, and are a great way to meet and play with other members.

Court Usage

Only indoor, non-marking shoes can be worn on our courts. Members and guests must not use shoes that are used outdoors, or general sports or running shoes as their soles will mark and damage the courts.

• Squash rackets must have an intact plastic non-marking bumper, and tape must not be used on the racket frame, to avoid marking the walls.

The courts should be kept clean with rubbish placed in the bins provided and clothing/racquets/balls or other equipment taken with the member when leaving the premises.

Cancellation Policy

It is your responsibility to cancel a court booking. Should you need to, the following rules apply:

Cancellations with 48+ hours notice get a full refund
Cancellations with 24-48 hours notice get a 50% refund
Cancellations with under 24 hours notice get a 20% refund
Cancellations with less than 2 hours notice, no refund

In the case of a booking system or lighting failure you will be entitled to a refund. If that happens please contact us at squash@brondesburysc.co.uk

Juniors

All players under the age of 19, whether members or guests, must wear appropriate eye protection when playing. Children under 14 years old of age must be supervised by an adult at all times on court.

Guest Policy

We welcome guests trying out the club, noting the following rules:

Guests are entitled to play with an existing member
The member can book against a guest and pay a £8 fee
The booking member should provide the email address of the guest player when booking a court

Exceptions for guests:

Guests invited to the club for an open event are not required to join. For example, an open squash tournament or open day
Any team members playing a Middlesex league club night will not be required to join
Guests invited to fill a spot in the Brondesbury middlesex  league teams will not be required to join the club – however, preference should be placed on existing members.
To help encourage children into the sport, members can bring under 16s to play them on weekend mornings before 1pm and not pay the guest fee. This is ideal for a child who may not want to be a full member just yet.

Court Bookings

All court bookings are made via your Member account at SportyHQ.

Squash Beginners

If you are considering playing squash for the first time or coming back to the game after an absence, you are very welcome at Brondesbury!

The Club runs Squash Courses of differing standards from time to time, so do check the Squash Notice Board for updates. Every Friday from 6:45pm is “Social Squash”. All members are encouraged to come along a mix in. There is a range of players with different abilities and experienced players are always willing to have a hit with new members.

Our internal box leagues are perfect for beginners and improvers to develop their game in a fun and light hearted competition. It is a good way to make new connections with members at a similar level. The main thing is to meet others and enjoy playing squash! We all started from the beginning, so we know what you want and can help you get that start you need!

If interested in joining our Club, please email your interest to:  squash@brondesburysc.co.uk. We’ll be happy to show you around our friendly Club. See the Squash Noticeboard in the Clubhouse for further details.

Squash Basics

Serving:
Server stands with one foot inside the service box and serves the ball to hit the front wall between the red service lines and to land in the oppositions back quarter.

Returning Serve:
The receiver must return the ball before it bounces twice, by hitting it against the front wall.

Rallying:
Players alternate hitting the ball against the front wall, which can also hit the side or back walls.

Scoring:
A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball, the ball hits out of bounds, or a “stroke” is called (the other player’s movement is hindered).

Winning a Game:
The first player to 11 points wins the game, unless the score reaches 10-all, in which case the game continues until one player leads by two points.
